What is scaling?
Scaling aims mainly to remove the plaque or calculus deposits on the teeth that are coated with bacterial plaque from the surface of the tooth above and below the gumline.
Scaling is necessary when plaque that has hardened form calculus by using hand instrument or ultrasonic cleaning device and can only be done by dentist.
Why scaling is important?
When a scaling is needed?
Usually teeth cleaning are recommended twice per year. For those with gum disease it is highly recommend having scaling (deep teeth cleaning) done every 3-4 months.
In recent studies, it is proven that the pathogenic bacteria that causes periondontal disease reaches a level that could cause disease in 9 - 12 weeks after cleaning done. Patients are advised for a repeat consultation with dentist after a period of 3 - 4months, to prevent bacteria load from reaching treshold, which could lead to reinfection.
Is it safe to do scaling during pregnancy?
Yes, scaling is safe for pregnant patients and can be performed at any time during pregnancy.
